Family Transitions

WEDDINGS:

I no longer hold a license to conduct weddings.  As years passed my family grew and married.  then inevitably,  grandchildren arrived, it became more difficult to book up Saturdays weeks in advance, over the Spring and Summer. After much to-ing and froy-ing and with some regret, I decided I’d let my celebrant’s  license lapse. I a, still available for people who wish a commitment ceremony that is not a legal marriage.

FUNERALS:

Celebrating marriages lead me to conduct funeral ceremonies and I continue to assist with celebrating the life of loved ones and the expression of loss and grief of family and friends.  It is a real privilege to be able to serve my communities in this way and to ensure that relatives say goodbye in the way they choose. If you are looking for support to create a ceremony for your loved one, please contact me.                021 150 1523

NAMINGS:

Naming children is a special transition for a family and this too requires a ceremony fitting to welcome a new arrival to a family or to celebrate a young person as they move into a new life phase.  It is a pleasure to work with parents to tailor a ceremony to fit their needs, whether formal or informal.

Recently, I created a ceremony for a 13 year old girl who hadn’t had a naming ceremony as a baby and her parents decided this would be a good time to celebrate the transition into teenage hood..  I was thrilled for I have long thought a ceremony of appreciation at puberty would be a great idea.  And it was.  The family gathered, stories were told of the young women’s birth and early life and her recent triumphs. Her parents spoke of their love and pride in her and so did her brothers.   Poems and quotes were read to reinforce the informal messages.   The extended family renewed their commitment to loving her through this next phase of her life and everyone glowed in the aftermath.  I’d love to do more of these ceremonies that highlight this pathway.

Testimonials

Gaye’s story, Fairy Godfathers, about the awkward, reticent, unacknowledged goodness and generosity of men is doubly moving because it is created and told by a woman. It is told with such genuine gratitude and above all forgiveness for men’s ways, it made me cry. I listened to the story as I would listen to words of grace. This is a profoundly healing story.

Gaye Sutton took the audience on a rollicking traveller’s saga, rich with references to antiquity and mythology with frequent touchdowns on universal joys and sorrows. Gaye has the ability to use her vast research into the human condition in her telling. Her warmth and humour with earthy touches kept the audience amused, involved and touched.
